    Dear Zerrin,

I was just in the process of composing a response when I saw this input from Carl, which I agree with.  I am not an expert in the technical aspects of data storage and exchange, but I would say that understanding how to convey the appropriate amount of information in a transparent way to users is paramount.  Although systems like the GLAD portal have (or will have) the ability to map different format fields into one another, there may be other ways you are thinking of getting datasets to users.  In all cases the thought process should be to fulfill dataset requests, either through downloads from a central portal or individual requests in a way that allows a user to assess suitability.  This means not only flow and process names, but also meta-indicators for aspects of data quality and representativeness.

    Dear Pieter,

I just wanted to add to Martin's comments about the GLAD platform, and in particular the requirements on nomenclature and meta-indicators.  As Martin notes, GLAD is about connecting databases to users through a central portal.  In oder to do that, a minimum number of interoperability requirements for flow naming and meta-information have been established.  However, in no way do the minimum set specfiy all aspects of data.  At some point in the future, it is hoped that the number of indicators will be expanded and to include certain schema-specific information for activities such as the PEF and EPDs.

By the way the Helpdesk has a resource section where a good many files on aspects of database creation and management have been uploaded.  The ones already available should be augmented soon with additional ones, including advanced topics on online and web-based systems development and GLAD.

    Chris,

This is a very valid point, and not just for developing countries.  The primary question(s) we as database developers need to address is what are the benefits for governments to support these efforts, either as financial donors or as hosts of the database.  I think we have not done enough outreach to those governments who have decided to support such developments, but we do have some feedback from places where development has occurred.  This includes developing countries like Thailand as well as developed countries like the US and Japan.  Do you have some ideas on how to create a case study to convince gonernments to support these activities?  My sense is that such a case would include an internal (national users who are supporting or are themselves commercial entities for example) and an external (environmental aspects of trade goods) component.

I would sugget we move this conversation one level down to the "discussions" forum in the Helpdesk itself.  I will try to do this from my side as administrator.  Anyone who is member of the helpdesk can then weigh in.
